About
Changing Tempo is about rediscovering music and learning to compose later in life.
Music played a big part in my younger years. As a child, I spent most of my spare time playing drums and percussion in youth orchestras and bands, and singing in school choirs. I seemed to have a natural ear for music. I could sing in tune, harmonise easily, find chords and pick out melodies on the piano by ear.
Although I could read percussion music, I struggled with pitch, and in my impatience continued playing by ear rather than getting to grips with music theory. I chose not to take music O Level (or A Level), and in the end, despite dabbling with music here and there over the years, life and my career took me in a different direction.
A return to music
Music is my language. It’s how I connect with the world and translate my experiences. So, now in my 50s, I’m Changing Tempo - embracing a new chapter and a chance to pursue my passion. I’m diving into music theory, piano and orchestration, and starting to compose my first pieces in Garageband and Logic Pro.
Why I started Changing Tempo
Changing Tempo is where I share my learning, progress, discoveries, challenges and reflections, as well as the joy of rediscovering music. I hope it might inspire others to do the same, especially those returning to music later in life or learning from home for the first time.
Whether you’re starting out, returning after years away, or simply curious about composing, I’d love you to follow along.
About me
I’m Annie, a lifelong music lover, learner, and beginner composer based in the UK. I’m documenting my journey as I explore how to read music, understand theory, and compose orchestral and cinematic pieces using GarageBand and Logic Pro.
